"Nuns have always had a different set of priorities from that of bishops. The bishops are interested in power. The nuns are interested in the powerless."
Above quotation is from Roman Catholic author Gary Wills, writing in the New York Review of Books in response to the Vatican's current crackdown on U. S. nuns. Quoted in the June, 2012, edition of The Lutheran magazine, a publication of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA). And to Mr. Wills' assertion, I say AMEN!
To learn more about the power of the hierarchy in the Roman church and how power is wielded by the Vatican to keep priests and lay people in line, read the excellent book by a former priest of the Roman Catholic Church: Father Albert Cutié. In his very personal and controversial memoir entitled Dilemma: A Priest's Struggle with Faith & Love, Cutié details the what he went through with an antiquated Vatican policy: celibacy and marriage.
